Indoor lighting

by admin on November 17, 2011

Even when there are rules to place lighting spots for indoor lighting, such as the lumens method, we can certainly say the lighting levels depends on each person, what can result annoying for someone, might be comfortable to others.

Since these factors are quite ambiguous, it is necessary a technical classification to have clear concepts about indoor lighting and also understand the diverse factors that can alter this type of lighting.

The main concern about illumination, is the light source or lamp that its being used, domestic use lamps can be divided into categories such as, fluorescence, halogen and compact fluorescent. Being the filament lamps the less used over the past years, due to its lack of luminance and high energy costs.

For work environments fluorescent and low voltage halogen lamps fits the needs perfectly, as the indoor lighting is perfect and cheap as it has to be on pretty much all day.

Other variable that might alter the results of the desired indoor lighting, can be the colors of the walls, for that interior designers use the color rendering index (CRI) which gives the reproduction of a color sample under certain lighting, the higher CRI is, the best color rendering is obtained. there are 3 rendering groups and one special group.

For rendering group number 1 a value greater than or equal 85 gives us a cold look ideal for industry and workshops, for rendering group number 2 a value from 70 to 85 gives a color scale ideal for use in office space and schools, and finally rendering group number 3 gives a index value less than 70  is used in interior marginal environments whose interest lies not excessively color reproduction.

The group S (for special) is only used for very poor environments, and it is not used with frequency.

To give an example of the importance of this imagine a whitish-walled room under incandescent light, which is very rich in the infrared spectrum, it will accentuate the reddish-brown wood furniture and the result is a yellowish tinge.

Keep in mind that in many cases with only renew the indoor lighting can make big changes in the room decorations. Sometimes the difference can be made incorporating the ignition switch or intensity dimmer that allows to create different climates with the same lamp.

The indoor lighting may be substantially different depending on the room you want to illuminate. When we think about how to light a room must not forget that you must have a sense of unity with the rest of the house.  Organize a general lighting scheme requires to define what role, both aesthetic and practical artificial light meet each of the environments.

The combination of different types of light in the same space (general, spot, ambient or decorative), can also light up independently, allowing decorative interesting resources.

The light should always strive to be generally mild, preventing glare or lack of light necessary to see where we go. The other types of light will come later, highlighting a particular area or distributing other lights in work areas or reading areas.

Sometime in 1836-1845, Texas was an independent nation and it didn’t have a permanent capital city. Because of this dilemma, their congress enacted a plan to build a capital city in Central Texas zone. But this plan was met with clamor by Sam Houston, who wanted the capital to be placed in Houston, the city that was incidentally named after him. Nevertheless, Sam Houston never got his wish and Mirabeau Lamar who was elected President of Texas in 1839 approved the plan to put the capital in the small town of Waterloo and subsequently named it Austin in honor of the “Father of Texas”, Stephen F. Austin.

By 1841, Sam Houston became President. As someone who never approved of Austin as the capital city in the first place, he refused to stay in the presidential mansion and opted to reside in the Eberly House instead. When Mexico attacked Texas seizing San Antonio, President Sam Houston saw this as an opportunity to transfer the seat of government from Austin to Houston and ordered the removal of the nation’s archives. However, the residents of Austin figured that if they held possession of the archives, the capital was theirs and so they formed a vigilance committee.

In December 1842, a secret mission to retrieve the archives was made through the leadership of Colonel Thomas Smith and Captain Eli Chandler but their efforts were foiled when Mrs. Angelina Eberly spotted them and sounded the alarm by firing off one loaded cannon. This led to the ensuing Archives War which was eventually won by the Austinites. After which, the President back off anymore plans to transfer the government and Austin remained capital ever since.

Because of Angelina Embry’s heroic efforts, a 7-foot tall bronze statue of her firing the cannon was erected. This can be visited on Sixth and Congress in downtown Austin, TX.

An interesting fact about the city of Austin, Texas is that it is home to the largest urban bat population. During the months of March and April, thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats most of which are pregnant females migrate North to this area in order to give birth. They found a niche under the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge. And, these bats stay there throughout spring up to the early vestiges of fall when they begin to head south.

If you are wondering why the bats chose the Congress Avenue Bridge to be their home, this is because of the many crevices found under the bridge which the bats find as convenient settlements. In 1980, renovations where made to the Congress Avenue Bridge and the new design has created so many narrow but deep openings which are ideal for bats to stay in. The number of Mexican free-tailed bats that take up residence in this bridge can reach populations of 750,000 to 1.5 million every year.

Bat-watching season starts around March when the bats begin to settle in. Around sunset every evening, the bats fly out to hunt for food. When they go out in hordes, it can be a unique and interesting sight to behold. Thousands of bats head out into sky and this phenomenon has become a tourist attraction in the city of Austin. When bats are hunting for food, it has been estimated that they can consume 10-30 thousand pounds of insects every night. The bats stay in the region until October and they start flying south in order to avoid the winter season.
